Botswana

Most safari fanatics and guides will agree that Botswana offers the most truly diverse safari experience in Africa. From the arid Makgadikgadi Salt Pans to the wetlands of the Okavango Delta, you can experience everything on a Botswana Safari at any time of the year. It’s a safari paradise that offers everything.

But what makes the best safari in Botswana? In our opinion it’s the mobile safari option. All areas are drivable, so why not adventure round northern Botswana in your own 4×4 with private guides, accessing all the very best areas you can, with the flexibility to go where you want and stick by the schedule of a permanent safari camp all the time.

There aren’t many countries left where you can just pack up your 4×4 and explore some of the world’s last and most untouched landscapes, and Botswana has it all.

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is the world’s largest inland delta covering more than 6,000 square miles (15,500 square kilometers). Flood waters from the Okavango River flow from Angola and spill into the Kalahari Desert of Botswana, creating a magical oasis of crystal clear channels, lagoons and rivers. Home to a huge number of species, antelope and birds, the incredibly precious and sensitive environment is one of the most unique safari regions in the world.

Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi Game Reserve is located in the Okavango Delta. Moremi hosts the most endangered species of large mammals; cheetah, black rhino, white rhino, African wild dog and lion. Over 500 bird species (from water birds to forest dwellers) and over a 1.000 species of plants are also recognized in the Moremi. This is an extremely rich ecosystem that is kept alive but an incredible natural system where each and every plant, tree, mammal, bird, reptile and insect plays a part.

Linyanti & Savute

Savute, or Savuti as the San bushmen spell it, is a wild and remote corner of Chobe National Park. It stretches all the way to the Linyanti River and is home to the ever mysterious Savute Channel. The channel remained dry for almost 30 years and in early 2000 it mysteriously flowed again, transforming this wild, ferocious and savagely competitive region into a lush wetland at the Savute Marsh, without losing any ferocity. Magical place!

Chobe National Park

Chobe National Park is arguably the best big river front experience in Africa. Home to huge herds of elephants and buffalo, Chobe has a variety of landscapes that attract some rare species, such as Sable and Roan antelope. Predator action here can be intense, with healthy populations of lion, leopard and hyena. The park is accessible from Savute and Moremi, making it the perfect start or end to a safari.

Makgadikgadi Pans

The Makgadikgadi Pans are 16,000 square kilometres and the largest salt pans on earth, visible from space. Once an ancient lake, Lake Makgadikgadi, now a sandy desert with hints of vegetation and home to Africa’s biggest zebra populations. During the wet season this area comes to life, filled with water and vast flocks of flamingos, zebra, springbok and of course, the predators follow in suit, making this area another gem with fantastic bird sightings too.

Nxai Pan National park

Nxai Pan National Park is an off-shoot of the Makgadikgadi Pans. A large salt pan of roughly 2,580 soiree kilometres which offers the most unique experience in both the wet and dry seasons, and both completely different. The rainy season it’s home to the seasonal zebra migration, followed closely by watchful predators. SOme animals include wildebeest, springbok, impala, gemsbok, hartebeest, giraffe, lion, cheetah, wild dog, brown hyena, bat-eared fox, and occasionally elephant and buffalo.

Central Kalahari Game Reserve

Like most of Botswana, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is just another example of how unique Botswana is. This is the largest and most remote game reserve in Southern Africa. As the wet season draws to an end, this park attracts huge herds of plains game and with them come the lion, leopard and cheetah. You can see wildebeest, gemsbok eland, hartebeest, giraffes among many other species. Also another fantastic destination for off season bird viewing.
